free2read @ the University of Northern Colorado Libraries
Michener Library is once again preparing to observe Banned Books Week. In an effort to raise awareness of the issue of banned and challenged books, the Library is looking for volunteers to read for a few minutes from their favorite banned book sometime during the morning, noon, or afternoon during the week of October 1st - October 5th. If you are interested in signing up to read, please contact one of the following individuals:
A rally in support of intellectual freedom and first amendment rights in general and specifically the freedom to read, the right to read banned/challenged books, and the necessity of libraries to support/facilitate these freedoms. Students will be involved in making signs for the rally as well as participating in the rally, so please contact one of the following people by September 26 if you are interested in participating.
*** This rally does not protest any University of Northern Colorado policy. Rather, the rally applauds the University for its continued support of intellectual freedom***
Please join us for readings by UNC professors of the banned and challenged book Bless Me, Ultima and a discussion of intellectual freedom from Jamie LaRue. Bless Me, Ultima is the book chosen for Weld County Reads and was written by award-winning author Rudolfo Anaya and selections from this book will be read in both Spanish and English. LaRue, author of the book The New Inquisition: Understanding and Managing Intellectual Freedom Challenges, is the director of Douglas County Libraries in Colorado.
